Before

Statewide Stage 2 fire restrictions have been in effect on Utah's state, unincorporated private and BLM lands (including Trust Lands, state parks and WMAs) since June 26, 2026, and the state's official Utah Fire Info restrictions page still showed them in effect when it was read on September 3, 2026; incorporated cities and towns are exempt, and much of the rest of the state is under Stage 1. Utah's 2026 wildfire season is among its worst on record. Stage 2 prohibits all campfires/charcoal/pellet fires (even at developed sites), smoking outside an enclosed vehicle/building or cleared area, fireworks/tracer ammunition/exploding targets, cutting-welding-grinding in dry vegetation, and small engines/ATVs/chainsaws without a spark arrestor; a shielded gas/liquid stove with a shut-off valve is allowed in a 3-ft cleared area. Exploding targets are prohibited on all Forest Service, BLM and State Trust (SITLA) lands, and in Utah and Tooele counties. Federal land differs by unit: DIXIE National Forest DROPPED to Stage 1 effective July 27, 2026 (Order 0407-26-12, through Oct 31 — campfires allowed only in Forest-Service-installed pits at developed sites), while FISHLAKE remains Stage 2 (Order 0408-26-04). BLM Utah also posts orders per district, including a West Desert order barring steel-component ammunition/targets and a statewide prevention order banning fireworks and exploding targets until rescinded. Violations are a Class B misdemeanor (up to $5,000 on federal land). Confirm your exact unit at utahfireinfo.gov.

Now

Utah's statewide Stage 2 fire restrictions have been lifted. The Stage 2 closure orders that covered state and unincorporated private land from June 26, 2026 were rescinded county by county through the summer, and the last of them ended at 12:01 a.m. on September 5, 2026. The Stage 1 orders that remained after that have since been rescinded as well: Davis, Tooele and Utah counties on September 15, 2026, and Box Elder, Cache, Rich, Salt Lake and Weber counties on September 20, 2026. On the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands official fire restriction register, read on September 23, 2026, only 3 orders are still in force on state and unincorporated private land, and no Stage 2 order is in force anywhere in Utah. Those 3 are: Stage 1 in the unincorporated area of MORGAN COUNTY, effective June 19, 2026; Stage 1 in the unincorporated area of SUMMIT COUNTY inside the Park City Fire District and the North Summit Fire District, Order NECLO2661, effective 12:01 a.m. on September 4, 2026; and a closure over state and unincorporated private land in the LAKE MOUNTAINS, in and south of Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain and north of Soldiers Pass Road, effective June 10, 2026. None of these orders affect private land inside incorporated towns or city limits. Where a Stage 1 order applies, Utah Code 65A-8-212 prohibits open fires except in approved fire rings or grills at developed campgrounds and day-use areas on public land with pressurized running water, or in permanently constructed fire pits at private residences with a pressurized water system; smoking outside an enclosed vehicle, trailer or building, a developed recreation site, or a paved or cleared spot; fireworks, tracer ammunition and exploding targets; cutting, welding or grinding metal in dry vegetation; and running a motorcycle, chainsaw, ATV or other small engine without a working spark arrestor. Violation carries up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, enforced by county law enforcement; holders of a Division permit or waiver and on-duty firefighters are exempt. Federal and tribal land is governed separately and is not covered by the state orders: the BLM Salt Lake Field Office has been at Stage 1 since September 5, 2026 across Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele, Utah and Wasatch counties; a standing BLM prevention order has banned fireworks and exploding targets on all BLM land in Utah since June 17, 2025; a BLM closure remains west of Highway 89 between Bullion Canyon Road at Marysvale and the southern Piute County line; the Fishlake National Forest keeps its Cottonwood Fire and Wild Goose Fire closures; and the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation issue their own orders. Restrictions change through the season and by unit, so confirm your exact location at utahfireinfo.gov before you burn.

The rule today

Utah's statewide Stage 2 fire restrictions have been lifted. The Stage 2 closure orders that covered state and unincorporated private land from June 26, 2026 were rescinded county by county through the summer, and the last of them ended at 12:01 a.m. on September 5, 2026. The Stage 1 orders that remained after that have since been rescinded as well: Davis, Tooele and Utah counties on September 15, 2026, and Box Elder, Cache, Rich, Salt Lake and Weber counties on September 20, 2026. On the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands official fire restriction register, re-read on September 30, 2026 (register last edited September 21, 2026), only 3 orders are still in force on state and unincorporated private land, and no Stage 2 order remains on any state or unincorporated private land in Utah. Federal and tribal land is governed separately and is not covered by the state orders: the BLM Salt Lake Field Office has been at Stage 1 since September 5, 2026 across Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele, Utah and Wasatch counties; a standing BLM prevention order has banned fireworks and exploding targets on all BLM land in Utah since June 17, 2025, and exploding targets are prohibited on all Forest Service, BLM and State Trust (SITLA) lands and in Utah and Tooele counties; a BLM closure remains west of Highway 89 between Bullion Canyon Road at Marysvale and the southern Piute County line; the Fishlake National Forest keeps its Cottonwood Fire and Wild Goose Fire closures; and the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation issue their own orders. Some federal units still carry their own Stage restrictions running into the autumn, so a federal campground or trailhead can be restricted even where the state orders are gone. Restrictions change through the season and by unit, so confirm your exact location at utahfireinfo.gov before you burn.
