California's state motor vehicle fuel (gasoline) excise tax is 63.4 cents/gallon effective July 1, 2026 (CDTFA adjusts this rate annually for inflation). State and local sales tax also applies to gasoline, and cap-and-trade and Low Carbon Fuel Standard programs add further per-gallon cost (excludes the 18.4 cent federal tax).
