Statewide minimum sales and use tax is 5.3% (4.3% state + 1.0% mandatory local). It is higher in some regions: 6% in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, and Central Virginia; 6.3% in several southern localities; and 7% in the Historic Triangle (Williamsburg, James City County, York County). Groceries and certain personal-hygiene items are taxed at 1% statewide.
