Cannabis in Australia: allowed only under specific conditions.
Cannabis is illegal across Australia with one narrow exception: in the Australian Capital Territory (Canberra) adults 18 and over are exempt from criminal liability for possessing up to 50 g of dried or 150 g of fresh cannabis and growing up to 2 plants each, to a maximum of 4 per household. ACT Policing still states plainly that cannabis is not legal in the ACT — selling, sharing or gifting it, using it in public, and driving with any amount in your system all remain offences, and every other state and territory treats possession as a criminal matter.
Outside the ACT, penalties range from fines to life imprisonment depending on the type and quantity of drugs involved (Queensland Government). Unlawfully importing products containing cannabis may bring large fines or imprisonment (Australian Border Force).
