Having, using, or selling illegal drugs is a crime, and hallucinogens like ayahuasca and kambo offered in spiritual ceremonies are unregulated by Costa Rica's health ministry.

Heavy fines and jail; travelers have been assaulted, injured, or robbed while under the influence in ceremonies.
