Open burning is generally prohibited in the District of Columbia year-round. Under DC air-quality rules (20 DCMR Chapter 6, §604) open fires are banned except for narrow permitted exceptions, and the DC Fire Code separately bars any open burning when weather or local conditions make it hazardous. Recreational and cooking fires are allowed only within Fire Code limits. There is no seasonal burn-ban system — the prohibition is standing.
