On the Maine Forest Service report published August 26, 2026, nine of Maine's twelve fire-danger zones were rated Moderate and three were rated High; the map is refreshed daily by 9 a.m., so check it for your own town's zone before you burn. Maine controls open burning day-by-day rather than with standing seasonal bans: a permit is required for most open burning — free online via the state burn-permit service (maineburnpermit.com) or from your town's forest fire warden — and burning is allowed only when the day's wildfire danger class permits it in your town. The Maine Forest Service publishes the daily Wildfire Danger Report at mainefireweather.org (you can subscribe to get the day's class by email); the system is operational only during Maine's wildfire season, roughly late March through late November. Always confirm the day's fire-danger class and your town's rules before you burn.
