Before

Michigan has no statewide burn ban, but open debris burning is NOT PERMITTED ANYWHERE in 23 counties today on the DNR's daily Burn Permits map (map stamped October 12, 2026): all 15 Upper Peninsula counties - Alger, Baraga, Chippewa, Delta, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Luce, Mackinac, Marquette, Menominee, Ontonagon and Schoolcraft - and 8 northern Lower Peninsula counties - Alpena, Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Montmorency, Otsego and Presque Isle. In 14 more counties the map shows burn-permit restrictions in effect: Alcona, Bay, Clare, Grand Traverse, Lake, Leelanau, Mason, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee, Muskegon, Osceola, Roscommon and Wexford - select your county on the map to see the restrictions for your township. In 12 counties (Arenac, Benzie, Crawford, Gladwin, Iosco, Isabella, Kalkaska, Manistee, Newaygo, Oceana, Ogemaw and Oscoda) the map shows open burning permitted with proper precautions. Since the map's earlier October 12, 2026 reading, Alcona moved from not permitted to restricted, and Crawford, Iosco and Oscoda moved from not permitted to permitted with precautions. The other 34 counties, in southern Michigan, are outside the DNR electronic burn-permit system; burning there is handled by your local authorities. The map changes DAILY: a "YES" in the Burning Permits Issued column for your township is your permit for that day, a "NO" means no open debris burning is allowed there, and state law requires a permit before you burn debris. Restrictions are set county by county and township by township; check the DNR burn-permit map for your township before you burn.
