Before
Michigan has no statewide burn ban, but open debris burning is NOT PERMITTED ANYWHERE in 10 Upper Peninsula counties today on the DNR's daily Burn Permits map (map data of October 14, 2026): Alger, Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Luce, Marquette, Ontonagon and Schoolcraft. In 11 more counties the map shows burn-permit restrictions in effect: Bay, Charlevoix, Chippewa, Clare, Delta, Dickinson, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Menominee, Muskegon and Roscommon - select your county on the map to see the restrictions for your township. In 28 counties (Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Arenac, Benzie, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Gladwin, Iosco, Isabella, Kalkaska, Lake, Mackinac, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee, Montmorency, Newaygo, Oceana, Ogemaw, Osceola, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle and Wexford) the map shows open burning permitted with proper precautions. Since the October 12, 2026 map, Mackinac, Alpena, Antrim, Cheboygan, Emmet, Montmorency, Otsego and Presque Isle moved from not permitted to permitted with precautions; Chippewa, Delta, Dickinson, Menominee and Charlevoix moved from not permitted to restricted; and Alcona, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee, Osceola and Wexford moved from restricted to permitted with precautions. The other 34 counties, in southern Michigan, are outside the DNR electronic burn-permit system; burning there is handled by your local authorities. The map changes DAILY: a "YES" in the Burning Permits Issued column for your township is your permit for that day, a "NO" means no open debris burning is allowed there, and state law requires a permit before you burn debris. Restrictions are set county by county and township by township; check the DNR burn-permit map for your township before you burn.
