Florida burn bans are enacted COUNTY-BY-COUNTY and change week to week, triggered when a county's Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) crosses local thresholds; FFS warns that counties are not required to tell the state when they enact or lift a ban, so call your local city or county fire department to be sure, and check the FFS County-Enacted Burn Ban Map. Fire season is still active: from January 1 through August 23, 2026 the Forest Service counted 2,864 wildfires burning 206,378 acres on state-protected land, plus 197 federal fires and 66,393 federal acres - 3,061 fires and 272,771 acres in all. FFS authorization is required for open burning beyond small yard-waste piles, and burning is barred during Red Flag Warnings.
