No statewide burn ban is in effect, and fire danger was rated Low across the entire state when checked on August 28, 2026. New York's annual statewide residential brush-burning prohibition runs March 16 through May 14; outside that window DEC open-burning rules still apply, and burning garbage or leaves is illegal statewide year-round. Campfires and small cooking fires under 3 feet high and 4 feet wide using clean, untreated wood or charcoal are allowed. DEC rates fire danger by Fire Danger Rating Area, and all ten areas — Adirondack, Adirondack High Peaks, Catskill, Hudson Valley, Lake Ontario Plains, Leatherstocking, Long Island, Southern Tier, St. Lawrence and Upper Hudson/Champlain — read Low effective August 28, 2026. Ratings are reforecast daily and a Red Flag Warning can be issued at any fire-danger level, so check the current map and any local-government burn ban before burning.
