All open-air fires in Rhode Island (brush and yard debris) require a written permit from your local fire district, and some cities ban open burning outright. RI's fire-weather seasons run Feb 15–Apr 30 and Oct 1–Dec 15, and DEM states Red Flag Warnings are usually issued only in those spring and fall windows — a midsummer warning is uncommon (checked July 29, 2026, no state burn ban posted). When the National Weather Service does issue a Red Flag Warning, open campfires may not be allowed on DEM-managed public lands including RI State Campgrounds, parks and management areas; contact the campground for active restrictions. DEM splits the state into District 1 (Providence, Bristol and Newport counties) and District 2 (Kent and Washington counties). Check DEM's Wildfire Danger Report before burning.
