Oregon's 2026 fire season is severe and restrictions are set unit by unit — there is no single statewide stage. On ODF-protected land the SOUTHWEST OREGON DISTRICT (Jackson and Josephine counties) is at EXTREME fire danger, confirmed on the district's own public fire restrictions page on August 24, 2026. At Extreme, ODF prohibits chainsaws (including battery and electric ones), cutting, grinding or welding metal, mowing dried or cured grass, and running any other spark-emitting engine. Also in effect until fire danger drops: no debris burning, including burn piles and barrels; campfires, charcoal, cooking and warming fires only in designated campgrounds (bottled-fuel stoves and fire pits are allowed in a cleared area with the landowner's permission); no smoking while traveling, except in a vehicle on an improved road or in a boat; no fireworks, tracer ammunition or exploding targets on or within one-eighth mile of ODF-protected land; motor vehicles, motorcycles and ATVs only on improved roads free of flammable vegetation; and off state highways, county roads and driveways you must carry a shovel plus either one gallon of water or a 2.5-pound fire extinguisher. The NORTHEAST OREGON DISTRICT (Union, Baker, Wallowa, Umatilla and parts of Malheur, Grant and Morrow counties) was at EXTREME regulated use when ODF last published a level in July; ODF sets the level per district under a standing proclamation and it changes through the season, so confirm your district on ODF's public fire restrictions map before you go. On federal land: CENTRAL OREGON public lands (Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests, Crooked River National Grassland and the Prineville BLM District) moved to STAGE 2 public-use restrictions on July 25, 2026 — open fires, wood stoves and charcoal are banned even in developed campgrounds and Wilderness, and chainsaw use is prohibited; the Umatilla National Forest is under Phase C public-use restrictions (smoking, off-road travel, chainsaws) July 24 through Oct 1; and BLM's Vale District issued emergency area closures on July 28, 2026, with still-open areas at Public Use Restriction Level 2 (no campfires or charcoal). Year-round on ODF and federal land: no fireworks or exploding targets, and engines need a spark arrestor.
