Georgia Exhaust & Muffler Laws (2026)

Info: Every motor vehicle must have an exhaust system in good working order and in constant operation — the piping from the exhaust-manifold flange through the muffler(s) and tailpipes, securely fastened, with the emission point extending beyond the rear or outside of the passenger compartment; flexible pipe is prohibited except on diesel tractors or per the manufacturer's original specifications (O.C.G.A. § 40-8-71).

It is unlawful to use, sell or offer for sale a muffler causing excessive or unusual noise or annoying smoke, or any muffler cutout or bypass — a misdemeanor. Georgia sets NO decibel limit; bills proposing one (95 dB in 2021, and 70 dB / 95 dB for motorcycles in 2024) did not pass.
